Do hair straighteners really do a lot of damage to your hair?

I always hear rumors about how bad it is to straighten your hair on a regular basis, but I feel like almost everyone with long hair uses straighteners or curling irons to style their hair. Does anyone know what the short term and long term effects are of using heating products such as straighteners and curling irons?Do hair straighteners really do a lot of damage to your hair?
It depends what kind of straightener you have, also how much you use it. Not all straighteners damage your hair as bad as others. Of course it dries your hair out but so do blowdryers and as long as you protect your hair (with product) you should be able to at least straighten your hair w/o that much damage.Do hair straighteners really do a lot of damage to your hair?
if u straighten ur hair u use heat and it is like ur ironing ur hair i never do that i keep it the way it is
i straighten and blow dry mine EVERY MORNING and my hair still feels silky smooth with the right shampoo and conditioner....

but my mom colors and straightens and blow dries her hair and its like frail and thin and unhealthy as ever....

i think the combination adds a lot of damage because she dyes it on a regular basis...but im still doing just fine with my hair being straightened....
Yes, its bad especially if you have dry hair. if you have oily hair, its not as bad. but you should always use a heat protectant spray.
If you use a cheap flat iron yes. There is a huge difference between ceramic coated %26amp; solid ceramic plates. In a more expensive flat iron you also get a solid cermic heating coil which distributes the heat evenly across the plates. Damage will also depend on your hair, is it fine, meddium or coarse. If someone has mutliple chemical service and flat irons every day it will damage the hair. If you have taken great care of your hair, invest in a great iron (GHD or CHI), limit your chemical services (hair color, relaxers) and apply a heat protecting spray (S-Factor Flat Iron SPray) prior to flat ironing you wont damage you hair.
Dont over do it. One of my friends hair(she staighttens EVERY day) is very weak and the ends all all dead..
I think it CAN damage your hair, it all depends. Like you hav 2 use a good quality straightner oh %26amp;%26amp; i use this product from Pantene that i run throught my hair before i straighten it. It makes my hair smell relly good and protects it against the iron=]]. I think as long as you do these things, your good!!
Well it gives split ends , so all you got to do is go to the hair dresser every so often
yeah, they can dry out your hair and give you split ends. you would be more at a risk though if you do not get a ceramic straightener. so make sure if you do get a 'ceramic' straightener or curling iron.
YES YES YES YES dry brittle hair and u get split ends it is so awful but yet we continue to straighten our hair y cant we just stop!!!!
Well I jus know long term n ur hair gets really rough n stiff.
